Empire Brass has appeared in more than 35 countries around the world. In a recent U.S. tour, Empire Brass presented the Sound of Christmas with Elisabeth von Trapp with performances at the Ravinia Festival Chicago and the National Gallery in Washington D.C. Empire Brass was a featured guest of the NTD-TV Madison Square Garden Gala that was broadcast live to more than half a billion people around the world. They have appeared as soloist with all the major US orchestras in addition to Europe, Japan, China, among others. They have released more than 85 CD recordings on EMI, CBS, Sony, BMG, Telarc, and most recently under the Concord Music Group. CDs will be available for purchase at the concert.
Meet the Brass, all of whom have held leading positions with major American orchestras and perform more than 100 concerts a year, in major cities around the world:
Trumpet : Rolf Smedvig has performed as soloist with the Boston Symphony, Chicago, New York, Japan Philharmonic, Zurich Tonehalle, and most recently made a major tour of Korea. Mr. Smedvig has numerous Grammy nominated solo recordings and recently released a CD/DVD – Learning from the Legends – the Haydn and Hummel Trumpet Concertos. Currently he is recording a new CD of trumpet and piano sonatas with Peter Serkin. He has served on the faculty of Boston University and the Tanglewood Festival. He currently resides in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts with his wife and four children.
Trumpet : Dereck Lockhart has performed with the Empire Brass since 1994. He has performed in South America, Israel, Monaco and France as a member of the New World Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas, Director. As a principal trumpet, Mr. Lockhart has been a member of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Symphony and the New World Symphony. In addition to his work with the Empire Brass, Lockhart is a member of the Grammy Award winning Motor City Brass of Detroit. Mr. Lockhart is a founding member of the New World Brass and has recorded with them on the Argo Music Label . Currently residing in Detroit, he performs regularly with the Detroit Symphony, the Michigan Opera Orchestra and at the Sunflower and Colorado Music Festivals. A graduate of the University of Michigan, his instructor was Armando Ghitalla.
French Horn: Dr. Andrew Pelletier is a horn soloist and Grammy-Award winning chamber musician and regularly performs around the world. Dr. Pelletier is the prize winner of the 1997 and 2001 American Horn competitions and has appeared as soloist for the International horn Society in 1997, 2003, 2005, 2009 and most recently in 2013 . An active chamber musician, he won the 2005 Grammy for Best Classical Recording. Dr. Pelletier serves as professor of horn at Bowling Green State University College of Musical arts and received his DMA as outstanding graduate of the University of Southern California.
Trombone : Alexei Doohovskoy has been touring with the Empire Brass since 2003. With the quintet he has appeared as a featured artist with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the U. S. Air Force Band and the Northeast Pennsylvania Philharmonic. He performs regularly with New England area orchestras including the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Orchestra of Indian Hill and the Boston Pops. Currently on the music faculty at Brown University, Mr. Doohovskoy also teaches at the Rivers School Conservatory in Weston, MA. Recent solo appearances include concerts with Brown University Wind Symphony and recitals sponsored by Rhode Island College, the All-Newton Music School and the Bay Chamber Concert Series in Rockport, Maine. Mr. Doohovskoy is a graduate of Brown University with graduate degrees from Boston University.
Tuba : Kenneth Amis has been a composer, conductor and tuba performer with Empire Brass for 20 years. He currently serves on the faculties of MIT as director of bands and of Lynn University of Boca Raton, Florida. His numerous compositions have been recorded and performed around the world. Mr. Amis is a former member of the New World Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas, Director, and has served on the faculty of Boston University and the Tanglewood Music Center–Empire Brass Seminar.
