Professional symphony orchestra! — For the tenth consecutive spring, we at Civic Music are proud to close our season with the brilliance and power of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, a Wisconsin cultural treasure. Under the musical direction of Maestro Edo de Waart, the 68 full-time professionals of the MSO bring the full measure of symphonic beauty to the Green Bay stage.

Russian String Orchestra Misha Rachlevsky

Encore! Longtime subscribers might recall this group’s 2010 visit as one of the most dazzling demonstrations of musical virtuosity in series history. Founder and musical director Misha Rachlevsky returns at the helm of yet another all-star ensemble of exceptional young players, whose concerts and recordings have earned rave reviews from Russia to Western Europe to North America.

Civic Music received word late Friday night (Nov. 13) that the Solid Brass Ensemble could not get flights from New York City to Chicago to Green Bay due to fog and winter weather cancellations. The Saturday night, Nov. 18 concert of Brown County Civic Music, which would have featured the Solid Brass Ensemble at West High School’s Holter Auditorium, has been CANCELLED. We are investigating possibilities for rescheduling Solid Brass for later in our 2017-18 season.

Solid Brass Ensemble

Live from New York!  Double the size of a typical brass quintet, Solid Brass transports listeners on a journey through medieval ceremonial music, John Philip Sousa, Strauss, Bizet, Benny Goodman, the Beach Boys and more. Players are drawn from the New York Philharmonic and Metropolitan Opera orchestras, Broadway shows and major-label studio sessions.

Imani Winds

Classically progressive! This polished, Grammy-nominated quintet features four woodwinds — flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon — and that most sublime of brass instruments, a French horn.  Newly appointed as Ensemble in Residence at the University of Chicago, Imani is known for exuberant musicianship, artistic risk-taking and a rising national profile.  Their name means “faith” in Swahili, reflecting African-American and Latin American roots.

Dynamic duo! Praised as “the gold standard,” these red-hot Juilliard alumni had their October 2016 recital at the National Gallery rated spectacular by the esteemed Washington Post: “(Greg) Anderson and (Elizabeth) Roe are the very model of complete 21st-century musicians. They fuse classical and pop music into a blend of high artistry and skillful entertainment… They are crack pianists…”

For the Anderson & Roe concert, we’ll sample an evening of music at the gleaming new Ashwaubenon Performing Arts Center at 2391 S. Ridge Road, Ashwaubenon, WI.

We’ve landed a super sub for the November cancellation that occurred when East Coast weather grounded Solid Brass Ensemble. Unable to reschedule, we turned to an exciting young group we had already been eying for next year’s series: the all-female Seraph Brass led by trumpet standout Mary Bowden. They’ll perform for us at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24. (Use your tickets for the cancelled show for this one; if you’ve misplaced them, just check in at our Civic Music table in the lobby.)

Opera in the Garden – Green Bay Botanical Garden ampitheatre – Florentine Opera Company

The Brown County Civic Music association is partnering with the Green Bay Botanical Garden to present Opera in the Garden on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from  4 to 5:30 pm. Music lovers will enjoy a variety of popular and Broadway opera performances by The Florentine Opera featuring the Summer Concert Residency Artists. Lawn seating is free, no ticket is necessary. Cowles Terrace tickets are $10 each and may be purchased at gbbg.org/Opera.

Special Venue: This concert is at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts (UW‑Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive Green Bay, WI 54311 ) to make use of the facility’s world-class, 3,700‑pipe organ.
