CHANTICLEER – AN ORCHESTRA OF VOICES

Called “the world’s reigning male chorus” by The New Yorker magazine, and named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008, the San Francisco-based, GRAMMY® award-winning ensemble Chanticleer embarks upon its 36th season in 2013-14, performing in 23 of the United States. A winter international tour of 9 European countries will see debuts in Dublin, Moscow, and St. Petersburg; and returns to Paris, Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Bruges. Praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for their “tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity,” Chanticleer is known around the world as “an orchestra of voices” for the seamless blend of its twelve male voices ranging from countertenor to bass and its original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to venturesome new music. Chanticleer will open the 87th season of the Brown County Civic Music Association on Friday, October 4, 2013 with a program titled She Said/He Said, a complex and emotionally charged dialogue between the sexes. Godliness bestowed upon women (by men) is extolled in works by Andrea Gabrieli and Eric Whitacre. The bawdiest of Renaissance Madrigals, standards by Cole Porter and Ravel’s dramatic Trois chansons will revisit this this age-old topic. She Said/He Said features the wide-ranging voices of Hildegard von Bingen, Stacy Garrop, Joni Mitchell and more. See the program and program notes for details.

International Chamber Soloists Biography

Season Listing | Program | Biography

International Chamber Soloists is a unique group of extraordinary young string players from all over the world. Founded in 2004 by violinist Dmitri Berlinsky, the group has received high praise for its performances at home and abroad.  This season, the Toronto Globe & Mail wrote: “In the best of today’s chamber orchestras, there’s no room for wimpy playing: These ensembles are muscular, agile, flexible and out to make an impression. That’s a pretty good description of the International Chamber Soloists — These musicians approach everything they play with an infectious alacrity…”

Such praise is born of the dedicated leadership of the multi-award-winning Berlinsky, who has hand-picked the group’s members for their talents as soloists as well as for their gifts as ensemble musicians. International Chamber Soloists has performed widely throughout the United States, including appearances for major series in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, DC. Among other engagements, the group gave a ten-concert tour in the mid-western United States and made its Canadian debut tour this season. In addition to its participation in international festivals in Costa Rica and Mexico, the International Chamber Soloists was orchestra-in-residence at the 2010 Southampton Arts Festival on New York’s Long Island.

International Chamber Soloists members also perform with such major orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Detroit Symphony and Cincinnati Symphony, and the best of the young artists from the Juilliard School of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, the Curtis Institute, and Yale University have also toured with the group.

Dmitri Berlinsky arrived on the International scene as the youngest winner in the history of the Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy. This victory led to his performance on Nicolo Paganini’s own Guarneri del Gesú instrument, a privilege shared by only a handful of artists in history. Subsequent triumphs at the Montreal International Violin Competition, the International Tchaikovsky Competition and the Queen Elizabeth Competition, led to appearances with major orchestras in Europe, Russia, the Far East, North and South America.

Mr. Berlinsky has performed literally the world over, and has appeared in such major venues as Carnegie and Avery Fisher Halls in New York, The Kennedy Center in Washington, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Since arriving in the U.S. as the winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Dmitri Berlinsky has performed in nearly every state, and he has enjoyed acclaim for his appearances at festivals such as Mostly Mozart, Prague Spring, Aspen, Newport and many, many others.

A frequent guest soloist, he appeared with the Leipzig Radio Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic, Montreal Symphony, Sinfonia Toronto, New York Chamber Symphony, New Jersey Philharmonic, Berlin Staatskapelle, I Musici de Montréal and the Prague Chamber Orchestra among many others. In addition to his busy performance schedule as leader and violin soloist with the International Chamber Soloists, recent engagements include concerto performances with the St. Petersburg Symphony, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic, and a European tour with the Chamber Philharmonic of St. Petersburg.

Born in St. Petersburg, Dmitri Berlinsky appeared at a very early age as soloist with the St. Petersburg Symphony and the Moscow Philharmonic. He studied at the Music School for Gifted Children and later attended the Moscow Conservatory. After graduation he was invited to work with famed pedagogue Dorothy DeLay at The Juilliard School.

Mr. Berlinsky’s CDs “Live at Waterloo” (Pavane) and “Souvenir D’un Lieu Cher” (Helicon) have won critical acclaim, and his performances are featured in the Emmy-Award documentary “Life on Jupiter” and in “New York Canvas”.

Dmitri Berlinsky is Artist Teacher and Professor at the College of Music of the Michigan State University.
